CogAT for Students in Grades 2 and 5… Between Monday, September 27 and Friday, October 8, second and fifth grade students will complete the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). The CogAT appraises the cognitive development of students by measuring students’ learned reasoning abilities. The questions on the CogAT require students to demonstrate their reasoning abilities in three areas most closely related to success in school: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and nonverbal reasoning. The Verbal Battery assesses students’ abilities to use search, retrieval and comparison processes that are essential for verbal reasoning— the Quantitative Battery assesses students’ abilities to reason about patterns and relations using concepts that are essential in quantitative thinking— the Nonverbal Battery assesses students’ abilities to reason with novel questions that use spatial and figural content. The results of this assessment are used to identify individual learning strengths and weaknesses and determine student program placement. This assessment will be conducted in the regular classroom setting. At the second grade level, testing will take approximately forty-five minutes during three days. At the fifth grade level, testing will take approximately thirty minutes during three days. We anticipate receiving the results of this assessment by January 2022.
REFLECTIONS 2021-22: I WILL CHANGE THE WORLD BY....Looking for a creative outlet to express yourself? Or do you have a talent you have been wanting to explore? Show us what you got and enter in Welch's PTSA Reflections contest. Reflections is an opportunity for students to share their artistic talents in six different ways: dance, choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography, and visual arts. So, you might ask, how do I get started? It's really simple. Think of a talent that you could share and reflect upon the theme, I WILL CHANGE THE WORLD BY…, and let your creative juices flow

Erin's Law Parent Information… In response to concerns regarding child safety and vulnerability to sexual abuse, the State of Illinois requires schools to provide instruction in personal safety and awareness of safe/unsafe situations. This law is known as Erin's law. In each grade level, the program will discuss abuse prevention at an age-appropriate level for our students. Our schools are committed to the safety and well-being of our students and that is why we feel that providing this program is so important. We are providing a live virtual parent information night for kindergarten, first, and second grade parents on Wednesday, September 22nd from 6:30pm-7:30pm. Please note that Welch will have these presentations in the spring— parents will be communicated with prior to the presentation in addition to being given the option for their child(ren) to opt out. The live presentation is accessible online via Zoom online at:

Safety Week… As you are likely aware, we conduct multiple drills each school year to practice safety procedures. These include evacuation/fire, severe weather/tornado, bus evacuation and law enforcement/critical incident drills. By practicing emergency procedures, research shows we are more likely to respond effectively in the event of an actual emergency.
During any emergency situation, our first and primary focus is the safety of our students. Of course, emergency situations are dynamic and communication is provided to staff, students, and families as soon as possible. Over the next two weeks our staff will be talking with students about the importance of listening to adults during a safety situation, being alert, having situational and exit awareness, moving with a purpose, and knowing the meeting place. We will then practice these with students. Please reach out to me or your child’s teacher with any questions or concerns!
Professional Development Wednesdays…. As a reminder, every Wednesday is Professional Development for our staff. Therefore, school starts at 9:15 AM.
Morning buses will run normal routes, just 10 minutes later
Car line/walker student entrance will begin at 9:00
There are no changes in afternoon dismissal
It is a GREAT day to be a Welch White Tiger!
